How to Make a Car Insurance Claim

If you have been in an accident or involved in a hit-and-run and your car has been damaged, follow these steps to proceed with your claim.

  1. Safety first!
    •   Make sure you and your passengers are ok, and attend to anyone injured
  2. Call the police.
    •   In case of emergency, call 911 immediately
    •   Call the police to report the accident if damage to your car exceeds $1000 or a criminal act may have been committed
    •   If in Ontario, contact a Collision Reporting Centre within 24 hours if damage is believed to be more than $1000
  3. Exchange information with the other driver if applicable. If you were involved in a hit-and-run, skip this step and proceed to the next step.
    •   Exchange insurance information with the other parties involved (i.e. names, addresses, contact information, and license number)
    •   Vehicle information should include: make, model, plate number, and vehicle serial number
    •   You may need contact information of other passengers and witnesses
  4. Contact us before towing the vehicle
    •   Report the incident by calling us
    •   Have the following handy: policy number, the police report and the information you collected (photos, witnesses’ names, etc.)
    •   Alternatively, use the TD Insurance app for step-by-step auto accident guidance and the ability to file the claim from your phone
  5. Depending on the extent of damage and your policy, you may be eligible for rental car coverage.
  6. Remove valuables and personal belongings from your car.
  7. Get your car repaired.
    •   Consider using one of our preferred collision repair shops or the repair shop of your choosing.
    •   The claims analyst will work with you and let you know if a deductible will apply
    •   If your car is not repairable, it’s deemed a Total Loss

If your car has been deemed a Total Loss, follow these steps to proceed with your claim.

  1. Your car is a Total Loss.
    •   The damage is so extensive that it can’t be repaired
    •   The cost of repairs will exceed the value of your car
  2. Contact us to provide additional information.
    •   Provide us with all receipts of work done over the last 6 months to help us determine the value of your car
  3. If your policy includes rental car coverage we will assist you in arranging one
  4. Complete a Proof of Loss form and send it to your claims analyst
  5. Provide us with your keys and vehicle ownership, and remove your belongings and license plate
  6. If your car is in storage, you may need to authorize us to move it.
  7. Determine the value of your vehicle, and if a deductible applies.
    •   Once all information has been evaluated, we’ll contact you with the final settlement and deductible (if applicable) details

If your car has been stolen, follow these steps to proceed with your claim.

  1. Report the loss.
    •   Contact the police to report the stolen car (make sure to get a copy of the police report)
    •   Contact us to give a statement over the phone
  2. If your policy includes rental car coverage we will assist you in arranging one
  3. Complete a Theft Affidavit if necessary and return it to us, once received, we will start the settlement process.
  4. Car found damaged or car not found.
    •   If your car is found by the police and is repairable, contact your claims analyst. They will start the car repair process. Then, get your car repaired by one of our preferred shops or one of your choosing
    •   If your car is found by police and deemed a Total Loss, you should proceed with steps for making a Total Loss form
    •   If your car has not been found, we will work with you to help establish the appropriate value of your vehicle. Provide all receipts of work done over the last few months to help us determine the value of your car
  5. Complete a Proof of Loss form and send it to your claims analyst if required.
  6. Determine the value of your vehicle, and if a deductible applies.
    •   Once all information has been evaluated, we’ll contact you with the final settlement details
