TD MyAdvantage FAQ's

Getting Started

This usage-based insurance program is available through the TD Insurance mobile app. It rewards your safe driving behaviour with a discount on your auto insurance premium. However, unsafe driving can result in a premium increase. You can join if you are listed as the primary or secondary account holder on an TD Insurance auto policy. This program is voluntary and free.

Activating the program on your smartphone allows TD MyAdvantage to record and collect information on your driving behaviour for each trip. This data is used to calculate your driving score and star rating so we can personalize your premium.

You can join if you are the primary or secondary account holder on your TD auto insurance policy in Ontario and Quebec. You must have an Android or iOS-based smartphone for TD MyAdvantage to accurately track your driving.

Please note, additional drivers cannot join the TD MyAdvantage program at this time.

To join, just contact us through our digital chat or call us at 1-866-223-1030 to get started.
After that, you can activate the TD MyAdvantage program by following these steps: * Download the TD Insurance mobile app and log in,

  • Find TD MyAdvantage on your TD Insurance app home screen and select "Activate",
  • Accept our terms and conditions,
  • Allow the necessary device permissions,
  • Ensure your location settings are always turned on.

No. Unfortunately, you cannot trial test TD MyAdvantage. However, you can leave the program at any time by calling us or letting us know via our digital chat.

Activation discount and personalized premium

This one-time discount is automatically applied to your premium to thank you for activating the TD MyAdvantage program.

To keep your discount, activate TD MyAdvantage within 10 days of enrolling and enable our program's in-app permissions. After that, you must take at least 30 trips before reaching your first driving milestone date. You can find this date on the TD MyAdvantage dashboard in your TD Insurance mobile app. Luckily, you will keep this discount even if you activate the program less than 60 days before your first premium adjustment and did not have time to record 30 trips.

This discount is only for customers activating TD MyAdvantage for the first time. Also, the activation discount will be clawed back if you do not complete the steps in your activation email within 10 days.

If you are a returning TD MyAdvantage user who previously activated this program, you will not be eligible for an activation discount again. However, you can pick up where you left off with the same TD MyAdvantage discount you already earned the last time you were participating.

Your premium is personalized 6 months into your auto insurance policy term. Any adjustment is based on your overall driving score and star rating if you meet eligibilities.

If you pay your premium across several payments, your remaining payments for the policy term are adjusted to reflect your new star rating.

If you pay your premium in a single payment and your driving score and star rating improve since your last premium adjustment, you get a refund on your premium. However, if your score goes down, you will need to make an additional payment.

Visit the TD MyAdvantage section of the TD Insurance mobile app for more details on your overall driving score and the exact date your premium will be personalized.

Yes. Unsafe driving can result in a premium increase. If this happens, find TD MyAdvantage in your TD Insurance mobile app for details on how to improve your driving and continue using the program. Remember, your premium is personalized every year. This gives you the chance to earn a discount for safer driving habits.

You must record at least 30 trips to get your first premium adjustment. After that, you must drive at least 1000 km every 12 months to be eligible for a premium adjustment.

You will be removed from this program after 45 days if you do not use our program during this time. If this happens, any of your applicable TD MyAdvantage discounts are removed from your policy. However, any premium increase due to your driving habits will continue to apply.

You keep your most recent TD MyAdvantage discount or premium increase when you renew your auto insurance with us. Visit the TD MyAdvantage section of the TD Insurance mobile app for more details on your driving score and overall star rating as well as the exact date your premium will be personalized next. Remember, if you unenrol from TD MyAdvantage, you will lose your discount. However, any surcharge applied to you due to poor driving will continue to apply after you have unenrolled.

Your premium adjustment applies to all the cars where you are assigned as a driver. If there are multiple drivers on one car, your adjustment only applies to your portion of the premium.

Leaving the program

Yes. This program is optional. You can cancel any time during your policy term by calling us at 1-866-223-1030 or using the digital chat.

Remember, you lose your applicable TD MyAdvantage discounts on your policy if you unenrol from the program. However, if you received a surcharge due to your driving habits, that increase continues to apply. This is true if you decided to leave or if TD Insurance deactivated your participation in TD MyAdvantage. Finally, if you decide to come back and reactivate the program you can pick up where you left off with the same TD MyAdvantage discount you already earned the last time you were participating.

You might be removed from the program if you do not finish activating TD MyAdvantage within 10 days of enrolling, or if you did not record any data within 45 consecutive days.

If you are unenrolled, any of your applicable TD MyAdvantage discounts will be removed from your policy. If you received a surcharge due to your driving habits, it would continue to apply.

Yes. You can rejoin the program at any time by calling us at 1-866-223-1030 or using our digital chat.

If you have previously activated the TD MyAdvantage program, you are not eligible for the activation discount. However, you can pick up where you left off with the same TD MyAdvantage discount you already earned the last time you were participating.

About star ratings and projected premiums

Find out how we calculated your projected premium by selecting "How are premium adjustments calculated?" in the TD MyAdvantage dashboard.

To see how we rate a specific trip, visit "View all trips" on the TD MyAdvantage dashboard in your TD Insurance mobile app. Select your trip. From there, you can access your trip performance and see which driving events affected your trip rating.

Remember, you have 30 days after each trip to review this information.

This shows how your premium can change if you keep up your current driving habits (i.e., your projected premium adjustment). You can find this on your TD Insurance mobile app home page. You will start seeing your projected premium after you record 30 trips using TD MyAdvantage.

Each of your trips earns a rating between 0 and 5 stars. Your rating is based on different driving events during your trips: braking, acceleration, cornering, speed, distracted driving, and usage. Every trip you take adds to your overall driving score and star rating. This rating is used to determine your projected premium adjustment. For details on how each star rating can correlate to a projected premium adjustment, see "How is this calculated" in your TD MyAdvantage dashboard.

Here are the driving events we measure:

  • Acceleration

Acceleration events can happen when your vehicle's speed increases quicker than is safe, given the type of road or safe speed.

  • Braking

Braking is determined by how frequently you brake hard. Hard braking considers how quickly and by how much you decrease your speed.

We know braking hard may be required at times. The score is calculated over the average of several trips so one occurrence in one trip should not have a significant impact on your score. Learn more about how accidents impact your car insurance rates.

·         Cornering

Cornering is determined by how fast the car is turning and the amount of "force" that throws drivers and passengers sideways.

  • Speed

Speeding is determined by whether you are driving at a safe speed compared to the posted speed limit.

  • Other factors

Your trip rating can also be impacted by the time of day, distance travelled, and highway driving.

We look at 3 levels of distracted driving when we rate your trips:

  • Hands-free calls that go through your headphones or your vehicle's system,
  • Handheld calls,
  • Direct screen usage (this will penalize your trip’s score most severely).

Each of these will negatively affect your score.

Yes. When a passenger uses your phone during a trip, it is considered a distraction. This will count negatively towards your trip's star rating. Visit "Trips to review" within TD MyAdvantage to review your trips.

Longer trips will likely cause driver fatigue. This means there can be a higher risk of having an accident.

Accidents are more likely to happen when driving late at night. If you use your vehicle between 11PM and 5AM, you must take extra care to maintain a good score. For example, if you speed during a trip at night, you might notice that the speed sub-score will be lower than if you were speeding during the day.

Your overall driving score is calculated using all your confirmed trips from the past 12 months. Once you have been using the program for a while, new trips may only have a small impact on your overall score. Keep up the safe driving. You have until your next premium adjustment to improve your star rating.

Trips

Yes. Don’t worry, though, you can delete the trip when this happens. If the program records a trip where you weren't driving, just:

  • Tap on "Trips to review" within TD MyAdvantage,
  • Find the trip you want to delete,
  • Swipe left on your trip to delete it.

This removes the trip from the program, so it won't affect your driving score or premium. You have 7 days to decline a trip before we save it to your overall score.

To turn trip tracking off, you must:

  • Go to the "TD MyAdvantage Preferences" page in your TD Insurance mobile app,
  • Turn the toggle "Off".

If you forget and need to delete any trips where you were not the driver, you have 7 days to visit "Review Trips" within TD MyAdvantage and swipe left on your selected trip to delete it.

Technology

You'll need either an Apple iOS or Google Android.

TD MyAdvantage is compatible with the latest 3 versions of iOS or Android operating systems.

However, it is not compatible with tablets and Blackberry or Huawei operating systems (OS).

First, uninstall the TD Insurance mobile app from your old device. Then, re-install it on your new device. After that, log into your account and follow activation steps for the TD MyAdvantage program.

TD MyAdvantage is designed to only use a small amount of your phone's battery while recording a trip. However, we do recommend having at least 20% battery charge so we can record accurately. However, if your trip is over 3 hours long, where GPS checks will impact your phone's battery life more. As a result, you might need to charge your phone.

No. Any sort of power-save mode will reduce this program's functionality and trip tracking. Settings like these tend to block location services.

No. You don't need a mobile data plan. However, you do need access to Wi-Fi. TD MyAdvantage collects your driving data using your phone's sensors and GPS. If you do not have a mobile data plan, your trip information will be uploaded once you connect to a Wi-Fi network, such as through your home, work, in your vehicle or other Wi-Fi locations. We expect data consumption to be like other apps that use GPS.

Keep in mind that if there is insufficient data or no Wi-Fi during a trip, the app may not record trips correctly. The app only uses a very small amount of data, even the most basic data plans should be enough.

Please note: The TD Insurance mobile app is free to download; however, standard wireless carrier data rates may apply.

Sometimes it can take a little longer for your trip to appear in TD MyAdvantage. Don't worry if the odd one is missing. While about 95% of your drives will be recorded, sometimes we will miss one.

However, a trip may not be tracked or shown if your mobile phone:

  • Was not in your car during a trip,
  • Needs a newer operating system to be compatible with the program,
  • Has a low battery level, was on power-saving mode or battery optimization mode,
  • Has GPS that wasn't performing as expected during your trip.

Other reasons a trip may not be tracked include accidentally logging into TD MyAdvantage on more than one smartphone, or needing to update your TD Insurance mobile app.

If you've checked everything and are still experiencing problems, contact us via the digital chat or call us at 1-866-223-1030.

Yes. This app must run in the background for the TD MyAdvantage program to automatically record trips after being activated. Visit TD MyAdvantage regularly in your TD Insurance mobile app to review your trips.

  • Your first and last name,
  • Your driver's license number,
  • Your email address,
  • Your enrolment date,
  • Your mobile phone number,
  • Your province and/or postal code,
  • Your insurer.

Once activated, TD MyAdvantage will collect the following:

  • Information you provide us under the program,
  • GPS data (location information),
  • Distance travelled for each trip,
  • Acceleration, speeding, braking, cornering data derived from GPS or accelerometer data,
  • Distracted driving data (using your smartphone while driving),
  • Time of day,
  • Confirmation of when the TD Insurance mobile app is being turned on and off,
  • Mobile device ID,
  • Total mileage for all trips,
  • Battery level and charging status,
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection information,

Internet connectivity (cellular or Wi-Fi).

You need to allow device permissions to have a great experience and for the program to function. TD MyAdvantage will not work unless you turn on location services in your settings. Allowing location permissions lets us detect driving behaviour, like changes in speed and when you start a trip. Motion sensors let us know which direction you're driving in, among other things. Finally, allowing background activity permissions lets this program run seamlessly whenever you get behind the wheel.

We will not share your information to any third party, other than the TD MyAdvantage service provider, except if required by law. TD Insurance only uses and shares your information as outlined in the TD MyAdvantage Terms and Conditions.

We have several security measures and standards in place to safeguard your information.  Please see TD Privacy Policy for more information about how we handle information we obtain from you. At TD Insurance, protecting your privacy and the confidentiality of your personal information is a fundamental part of our business.

No. Your phone calls will never be tracked or recorded. We only use phone call information to detect whether you are distracted while driving.

No. In TD MyAdvantage, each enrolled driver can only see their own trips.

Miscellaneous

Turn trip tracking off when you leave North America.

To turn off trip tracking:

  • Go to the "TD MyAdvantage Preferences" page in your app
  • Turn the toggle "Off".

We don't want to record your trips while you're away.

If you forget and want to delete any trips that occurred outside of North America, you have 7 days to visit "Review Trips" within TD MyAdvantage and swipe left on your selected trip to delete it.

No. Each driver enrolled in TD MyAdvantage must use their own credentials to log in to their TD Insurance app and use this program. If two drivers share a mobile phone, driving data is collected under the driver who is logged into the TD Insurance app. This means that there will be no driving data for the other driver(s) and may result in them being removed from the program.
