Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance helps financially protect you from eligible unexpected events that could affect your trip. You may need it to help reduce the financial impact of situations such as sudden illness, a delayed flight, or having to cancel or interrupt your trip. Provincial health plans offer limited medical coverage when you're outside of your home province. Travel insurance can help fill these gaps and help provide financial protection for medical emergencies, trip cancellations or interruptions as well as lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, depending on what plan you choose to purchase for your trip.

Each plan has specific benefits, exclusions, limitations and conditions, so reviewing your plan details can help you understand what's covered and choose the coverage that suits your trip.

Generally, to be eligible for travel insurance, you must purchase it before you depart on your trip. A good time to purchase travel insurance could be when you are booking your trip because you will have confirmed your travel information that you will need in your insurance application, such as your return and departure dates.

For Trip Cancelation and Trip Interruption insurance you should purchase this coverage as soon as you book your trip. This is suggested because the sooner you purchase the plan the sooner your coverage will begin. Trip cancellation & interruption insurance can help cover a portion of unused travel arrangements if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a covered event.

Travel medical insurance can be purchased any time before you leave for your trip.

A pre-existing medical condition refers to any disease, illness, or injury that existed before your application date or your policy took effect.

Having a pre-existing condition doesn’t disqualify you from getting travel insurance, but your pre-existing medical condition will have to be considered "stable" for a specified period of time before your effective date, to receive coverage.

Review your policy document to understand how long your medical condition will have to be "stable" for, how "stable" is defined and whether your medical condition meets all other pre-existing medical condition requirements.

Emergency travel medical plans help provide financial protection for unexpected medical emergencies that can happen while you're travelling. This can include coverage for hospital care, physician services and other medical expenses if you become sick or injured during your trip.

A Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan provides coverage for eligible travel expenses in case your trip is interrupted or cancelled. Trip cancellation provides coverage if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason before you depart for your trip. On the other hand, a trip interruption provides coverage after you depart on your trip.

Some factors that could impact your emergency travel medical coverage premium include:

Plan type: Your premium can vary based on the type of plan you choose and the level of coverage it includes.

Trip duration: This is the number of days you'll be away. Longer trips often come with higher premiums. This is because extended trips increase the duration of your coverage needs and potentially your exposure to risks.

Age of the oldest traveller: Premiums can increase based on the age of the travellers on the policy. Older travelers typically pay more for coverage, reflecting the increased likelihood of health concerns or issues.

Health history: Your premium may be affected by your health history. Typically, individuals with more health complications may face higher premiums due to increased risk. Some applicants may need to complete a health questionnaire as part of their application.

Number of travellers: Premiums tend to increase when more individuals are included under a plan. TD Insurance provides savings when applying under the family3 or couple2 coverage options.

Preferred rates: Preferred rates are offered to TD Home and Auto clients, employees and retirees of TD, as well as members of groups with an affinity partnership with TD Insurance.

If you're purchasing trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage

Cost of the trip: For trip cancellation and interruption coverage, premiums typically vary according to the cost of the trip.

Government provincial health plans offer limited coverage outside your home province and outside Canada.

A number of Canadians get travel insurance through their work or credit card. However, your existing travel medical insurance may not provide coverage for the entire length of your trip and provide lower coverage limits.

Reviewing your existing coverage can help you decide whether additional travel insurance is right for your trip.
