Prepare Your Home for Spring Thaw
Spring thaw may bring the promise of sunshine and warmer days, but it can also uncover hidden risks around your home. As temperatures rise, freeze-thaw cycles and heavier rainfall can lead to flooding or excess water pooling around your property, increasing the chance of leaks and foundation cracks. Each year, our claims teams see a noticeable rise in water damage during this time, but by taking a few keys steps, you can help protect your home and reduce costly repairs.
Here are some tips to help you stay one step ahead of water damage this season.
Steps you can take outside your home
- Clean eavestroughs and downspouts seasonally to prevent clogs. We also recommend checking that your downspouts are extended at least 6 feet away from your home.
- Inspect your roof regularly. Have a professional roofer check for damaged or missing shingles and fix or replace them as soon as you can. Water stains on interior ceilings or walls may be a sign of a leaky roof.
- Check your doors, windows and foundation for cracks or worn sealant that could let water in.
- Clear storm drains located near or on your property from debris and ice to support proper drainage.
Steps you can take inside your home
- Test your sump pump to ensure it's working. If you haven't already installed a sump pump with a backup power source, it may be something to consider.
- Install a backwater valve to prevent a surplus of water or sewage from entering your home. Many municipalities across Canada offer rebates for flood prevention upgrades. Check with your local municipality to see if there are incentives available to you.
- Prepare a "go-bag" if you live in a flood-prone area and include essential items such as prescription medication, important documents, valuables and a few days' worth of clothing/toiletries.
