How to Choose a Safe and Reliable Tow Service and Repair Shop
Whether it's a collision or a sudden breakdown, car trouble is stressful. The last thing you want is to be taken advantage of when your car needs a tow or repairs. These tips can help you stay in control and protect you and your vehicle.
Tips to protect yourself if you've been in an accident
- Contact your local authorities to determine who is authorized to tow your vehicle from the scene of the accident and whether the accident needs to be reported. In some areas, only approved tow operators are allowed. Authorities can quickly confirm this and dispatch the right help. Contact a claims adjuster. If you're a TD Insurance auto customer, you can quickly open a claim, get support or locate the nearest TD Insurance Auto Centre through the TD Insurance Mobile app. Prefer to speak with someone? TD Insurance auto customers can call us at 1-866-454-8910 for help with opening a claim or to get advice on towing, repairs and rental options.
- Take on-scene photos or videos of the damage incurred, if it's safe to do so.
- Know your coverage. Towing is included if you have collision or comprehensive coverage, but only when the tow relates to a covered loss. For example, if your car is damaged in an at-fault collision and you only have comprehensive coverage, towing wouldn’t be covered.
- Don't negotiate or admit fault with the other driver. Let your claim advisor guide you accordingly.
If You've Experienced a Sudden Vehicle Breakdown
- Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers to proceed with caution.
- Pull over safely when it is safe to do so. If you can't pull over, remain in your vehicle.
- Call for help. Depending on the situation, you may need to contact roadside assistance or a tow truck. If you are in a dangerous position, call 9-1-1.
You Have Options
If you've been in an accident and once you've ensured everyone's safety and contacted your insurance representative, the next step is deciding where to take your vehicle. You have options, and the freedom to choose what's best for you.

Before You Hand Over Your Keys to a Towing Service
There are loads of reliable services out there, but sadly there are also tow truck companies that take advantage of drivers in vulnerable situations. Protect yourself from dishonest tow truck operators with these tips:
- Only accept tows authorized by you or the police: Some areas have towing restrictions where only approved tow operators are allowed to remove vehicles after a collision. If a tow operator shows up unannounced, ask to see police authorization, verify with local authorities, or arrange your own tow through a trusted provider.
- Choose the tow destination: Unless police direct otherwise, pick the repair shop or TD Insurance Auto Centre you trust, don't let the tow operator decide for you.
- Ask questions: If you're feeling uncertain about your tow or just want to know more, don't be afraid to ask questions. Here are a few to consider:
- Where are you taking my car?
- Can I see a valid towing permit and company identification? How long have you been in business?
- Will I be able to access my vehicle?
- Are there impound fees?
If a company appears to be acting suspiciously or refusing to answer your questions, that might be a red flag.
- Ask for a clear estimate: Get a quote and an itemized invoice before payment. Some towing companies will use creative tactics to inflate the bill. Be on the lookout for charges that seem excessive or out of line with typical costs, as you could end up paying more than expected out of pocket.
- Choose how you pay: Confirm that you can pay by debit or with credit card. Refuse any services if the provider won't provide an itemized receipt or insists on cash only.
- Get written authorization: Insist on a towing authorization form and, later, an itemized invoice for all charges. Keep copies of all documents.
- Avoid surprise fees: Say no to compound yard storage, unless your insurance representative recommends it. Unnecessary storage can lead to excessive daily storage rates or being forced to pay more to retrieve your vehicle.
- Protect yourself: Never sign a blank contract or give out any personal details that you wouldn't normally give a business. Decline referrals from tow truck operators, they may not have your best interest in mind.
Before Committing to a Repair Shop
Just like with tow truck services, you have rights as a repair shop customer. Here are some tips and things to look out for before committing to an auto repair shop:
- Ask questions: Here are some questions to ask when choosing a body shop:
- What is the payment policy for the repairs being done on my car?
- Is there a written contract provided for all repair work?
- What kind of warranty do you offer with your repair work? For example, TD Insurance Auto Centres can offer a lifetime guarantee for your repairs, for as long as you own your car and remain insured with us.
If a body shop tries to avoid answering these questions or tries giving you the runaround, it may not be a trustworthy place to bring your business. A reputable body shop will be able to answer these questions and provide written documentation to back it up.
- Get a written estimate or agree on the maximum amount you're willing to pay, before repairs begin.
- Know the estimate fee: If they charge for an estimate, they must disclose the cost upfront.
- Know your rights: You are protected under the Consumer Protection Act.
Watch Out for These Repair Shop Scams
Even reputable shops can make mistakes, but some red flags may point to dishonest practices. Here are a few to be aware of:
- Unexpected price hikes: Final costs that exceed the agreed-upon quote are more than 10% without your written consent. Reputable shops should always get your approval before moving ahead with extra work.
- Inflated damage: After the initial inspection, the mechanic claims the issue is worse than anticipated and significantly increases the scope or price. If this happens, pause and ask for clear explanations, photos, or diagnostic reports before agreeing to anything further.
- Unnecessary fluid flushes or maintenance: Some shops may recommend services you don't actually need. As a guideline, fluids should only be flushed every 35,000 miles, or as often as is recommended in your car owner’s manual.
- "Phantom" leaks: A mechanic might claim to have found engine or fluid leaks " that may not exist. Ask them to show you exactly where the leak is and provide photos or videos before approving repairs.
- Used parts billed as new: Dishonest shops might install used or refurbished parts but charge you for new ones. Always ask for invoices so you can verify what was installed.
If you're feeling uncertain, you don't always have to decide on the spot. You can always get a second opinion from a licensed mechanic, certified repair facility or professional appraiser in your area.
