TL;DR – Insurance for a new vehicle
Getting a new vehicle and need to add it to your insurance policy? Here's what you need to know before you drive it home:
- Contact TD Insurance with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before pickup to get a quote, add the vehicle to your policy and confirm coverage.
- Bring proof of insurance when picking up the vehicle, since most dealers won’t release it without the required documents.
- Coverage can vary depending on whether the vehicle is replacing another vehicle or being added to your policy.
- Your province and current coverage can also affect how your new vehicle is insured.
Those are the must-knows. Read on below for more details.
How to add a new car to your policy before you drive away
Before you can drive your new car home, you'll need to make sure your TD car insurance coverage is in place. Whether you’ve recently bought, leased or obtained your additional vehicle via a gift or private purchase, the type of vehicle you choose, how you plan to use it and the coverage you need can all play a role in your policy and premium.
What steps do you need to take to add your new car to your TD Insurance policy?
Step 1: Get a New Car Insurance Quote
- Get a quote once you've chosen your vehicle by visiting the TD Insurance app, MyInsurance, or calling.
- Have the VIN available for a more accurate estimate. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a car's unique 17-character alphanumeric fingerprint.
Step 2: Add the Vehicle to Your Policy
- Contact TD Insurance via the TD Insurance app, MyInsurance, or by phone as soon as the purchase is confirmed.
- Add the vehicle to your policy before pickup whenever possible.
Step 3: Gather the Required Information
- VIN
- Lien holder information (if the vehicle is financed or leased)
Step 4: Bring Proof of Insurance to Pickup
- Obtain your confirmation of coverage.
- Most dealerships will require proof of insurance before releasing the vehicle.
- Additionally, add the digital pink slip to your Apple/Google wallet via the TD Insurance app. Currently, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Ontario are all areas that accept the digital insurance as legal proof, with hopes the rest of Canada will be soon to follow suit.
- Check with the dealer before your pickup date so you know what documents you’ll need to bring.
What Happens If You Can't Reach TD Insurance?
If you’re getting a new vehicle and can’t reach TD Insurance right away, keep your details handy, including:
- The bill of sale
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Purchase date
- Pickup date
- Lien holder name and mailing address (if financed or leased)
Contact us as soon as services are available again to add the vehicle to your policy, confirm your coverage and get updated proof of insurance.
If you already have an active TD Insurance auto policy, it may provide temporary coverage for a newly acquired vehicle in some situations. Coverage can depend on:
- Whether the vehicle is replacing another vehicle
- A new vehicle being added to your policy
- Where you live
- The coverage you currently have
Auto insurance is mandatory across Canada, and you’ll need valid coverage before driving your vehicle. If you’re unsure whether you’re covered, consider waiting to pick up the vehicle until you can confirm coverage.
Differences in insurance coverage between additional or replacement vehicles
If your new vehicle replaces another:
- Your existing coverage may apply to the replacement vehicle for a limited time. However, coverage isn’t guaranteed in every situation and may depend on your province, current policy, vehicle type, how the vehicle will be used and whether you contact us within the required timeframe.
- In many cases, the new vehicle will have similar coverage to the vehicle it replaces.
- You’ll still need to contact TD Insurance as soon as possible to update your policy, confirm your coverage and get updated proof of insurance.
If your new vehicle is an additional vehicle:
- Coverage rules may be more limited.
- Coverage only applies if all vehicles you own are insured with the same insurer.
Important differences by province
Coverage for new or replacement vehicles can vary depending on where you live.
Ontario
- Replacement vehicles typically have the same coverage as the one they replace.
- When adding a vehicle, claims may only be made under coverage that applies to all your insured vehicles.
Quebec
- Replacement vehicles, or vehicles added when only one vehicle is insured, generally have similar coverage.
- If you have more than one insured vehicle, coverage for a new vehicle may align with the least extensive coverage across them.
Alberta, Atlantic Canada, and the Territories
- Coverage may extend to a newly acquired vehicle, but policies do not always specify which coverages apply in every situation.
Before you drive away
We know you're eager to get behind the wheel of your new vehicle, but it’s important to make sure your insurance is valid before pickup. Contact TD Insurance as soon as possible to add your vehicle, confirm your coverage and get updated proof of insurance so you can feel confident when you get behind the wheel.
