Rental Cars & Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to car rentals, insurance might be the least exciting part of getting in the driver’s seat of your borrowed ride. (Don’t worry, we don’t take it personally.) Still, when you’re going through a claims car insurance process for your damaged vehicle, it’s good to know what to expect with your replacement rental car when it comes to insurance. We’ve looked at the most frequently asked questions about replacement car rentals and put together this helpful guide about your car insurance with the answers you need.

How Do I Know If I Have Rental Coverage If I Get Into A Car Accident?

Your policy may cover a rental car—and depending on your coverage, your rental car may also be insured under your TD Insurance policy for the duration that your car is in for repairs or replaced. If your car has been damaged, it’s also good idea to think about who is going to tow it and where they’re going to take it. Find out some helpful tips for choosing towing and repair services.

There are three ways to check your TD Insurance rental coverage: use the TD Insurance Mobile App, log in to MyInsurance or call us if you're unsure at 1-866-848-9744. If you’re covered, your coverage starts once your car is in for repairs or when it’s deemed not driveable.

Does My Insurance Policy Cover Getting a Rental Car After an Accident?

It depends! If you have Loss of Use coverage, your rental car will be covered by your insurance, and you can keep it until your car is repaired or until your coverage limit has been reached—whichever comes first.

If you have Collision, Comprehensive, Endorsement 27, 27S, or Legal Liability coverage (for leased cars) through TD Insurance, your rental car is also usually covered.

Even if you have rental coverage, it's helpful to keep in mind that your rental coverage doesn't cover the cost of gas, distance travelled (where applicable), or additional insurance, so there may still be some costs associated with your rental ride.

If you’re unsure of what’s covered or what you might need, a TD Insurance advisor would be happy to answer any questions you might have. If you’re don’t have car insurance yet, it’s easy to get an online car insurance quote in just a few minutes.

Does My Coverage Also Extend To A Rental Car for Leisure or Pleasure?

It depends! Your coverage may extend to a rental car if it falls under one of two endorsements (policy additions).

If your current auto insurance have liability coverage for damage to non-owned vehicles, your coverage will apply.

Your coverage will also extend to a rental car if you have the Grand Touring Solution® or Endorsement 27. This feature covers rental cars in Canada and the US. If you’re travelling elsewhere, you’d need an Umbrella Coverage package to be covered.

These endorsements should have you covered for third-party liability and damages to a car that isn’t owned by you, but is under your supervision, care, control, or usage within Canada and the US (rental cars fall into this category). These endorsements offer coverage to the person who’s insured, their spouse, and all drivers listed in the policy.

It's good to know that most rental car companies will offer additional coverage, but it’s up to you if you want to make that purchase. If you didn't purchase an endorsement that includes coverage, your TD Insurance policy would not cover the rental, and you would need to purchase private insurance through the rental company at your own cost.

Is There An Easy Way To Get A Rental Car While My Car’s Being Repaired?

Yes! We’ve opened TD Insurance Auto Centres— the only one-stop shops with TD Insurance claims advisors to answer your questions, on-site body shops with certified repair technicians and car rental services to get you back on the road. However, if your coverage doesn’t include rentals, this will be an additional expense. You also have the option to use a car rental service of your choice.

My Repairs Are Not Completed And I Still Have The Rental Car. Can I Extend My Rental?

Yes! Don’t worry, as long as you have rental coverage, a TD Insurance advisor can work with you to extend your rental within your policy’s term limits.
