Top-Up Your Travel Insurance

Preparing for a trip? It’s also a good idea to consider travel insurance in your plans. If you have an existing travel insurance plan but want to extend your period of coverage, consider "top-up" coverage. Whether it’s an existing TD Insurance Travel Medical Insurance plan or another insurer's coverage, TD Insurance Travel Insurance offers the ability to apply for top-up coverage.

What is top-up coverage?

Top-up coverage is an optional insurance coverage that you can apply  to extend the coverage period you may already have.  For example, through an existing travel insurance plan included on your credit card, or by your employer. Purchasing top-up insurance can help provide travel medical insurance coverage for travelers who find themselves away for a longer period than what they're covered for.

Here is an example of how top-up coverage works:

  1. Mark is travelling to a destination for 30 days. His credit card has emergency travel medical coverage of up to $1 million, for the first 21 days of the trip.
  2. Mark tops up his credit card coverage by purchasing a TD Insurance Travel Insurance plan for the last 9 days of this trip.
  3. After his purchase, for the first 21 days of his trip, Mark would have up to $1 million of emergency travel medical coverage through his credit card. For the remaining 9 days, he would have up to $5 million in coverage from TD Insurance.

What is top-up coverage for credit cards?

TD Insurance offers a top-up coverage option for certain TD Visa* Credit Cards, allowing you to extend your insurance coverage period during your trip:

  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
  • TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card
  • TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa* Business Card
  • TD Business Travel Visa* Card

Why should you consider top-up coverage?

A number of Canadians get travel insurance through their work or credit card. However, your existing travel medical insurance may not provide coverage for the entire length of your trip. Top-up insurance can provide travel medical coverage for the dates after that initial travel insurance coverage expires.

How do you apply to top-up your coverage?
