Frequently asked questions

The cost of car insurance is different for every person. We consider a number of factors when calculating your car insurance premiums. These include:

  • Your car
  • How much you drive
  • How you use your vehicle
  • Your driving record
  • Where you live
  • The coverage you choose

Comprehensive insurance is additional coverage that protects your car from loss or damage not typically covered by Collision coverage.

This means your car is protected from things out of your control, such as:

  • Car theft/attempted theft
  • Vandalism
  • Damage caused from falling trees or objects
  • Damage caused by an animal
  • Weather-related damage from lightning, windstorms, hail, rising water, earthquakes or fire

A deductible is the amount of money you agree to pay out-of-pocket when making a claim under your policy. We will pay the remainder of the claim up to any applicable limits as outlined in your policy.

Typically, your insurance company will deduct the deductible amount from any settlement paid. For example, after the car repairs are complete, we will pay the repair shop directly minus your deductible. You are responsible for paying the deductible amount directly to the repair shop.

There is mandatory coverage, that is regulated by the province or territory you live in. And then there's optional insurance that you can add on to your policy.

Liability insurance is mandatory, it financially protects you if you are held responsible for damages and injuries to a third party or a third party's property. Accident Benefits is also mandatory in several provinces. It covers medical expenses, income replacement, and other benefits to help you recover from an accident.

Damage to your car after a collision with another car or object, like a tree or pothole, is covered by Collision, which is optional. Comprehensive is also optional and covers damage or loss to your vehicle from causes other than Collision, like fire, theft, or hail.

Collision insurance is a type of coverage. Let's say your car came into contact with another vehicle, or object (for example, underground parking post, garage door, street sign), and was damaged. If you had collision coverage, the cost to repair or replace your vehicle would be taken care of1.

Specific benefits vary by province, but the overall benefit of having Collision coverage is that you minimize out-of-pocket expenses2, except for the deductible and perhaps, a rental car.
