Motorcycle Insurance Restrictions

Worried about restrictions? We’ll help you figure out whether you are eligible for coverage or not. Simply call us or get a free motorcycle online quote.

Licensing

To obtain an insurance policy, you and all the people you will list as users of the motorcycle will need to have a valid motorcycle license.

Customization or modifications

If you have altered your motorcycle to enhance its performance or appearance, we might not approve some modifications. For example:

  •   Modifications to the frame or suspension
  •   Any modification that might increase the power by over 25 cc’s from the manufacturer’s original specifications

Past losses or convictions

Restrictions based on a prior accident record will vary depending on whether you are looking for a new insurance policy or wish to renew an existing policy. Other criteria include the time elapsed since your conviction and the nature of the conviction.

Legal issues and non-payment

If you have been convicted of auto insurance fraud in the last 10 years, or were involved in any fraud or misrepresentation, this will affect your likelihood of obtaining insurance.

Non-payment of the policy premium may result in cancellation of your policy.

Restrictions may also apply to a claim if you fail to comply with our coverage terms (for example, if you declined to provide us with requested documents).

Other issues

There are a number of other factors that can prevent us from issuing a policy:

  •   Your motorcycle is used for racing, competition or jumping.
  •   Motorcycles manufactured outside of North America but don't have an established distribution channel in Canada or the United States.
  •   Motorcycles identified as ‘youth’ models (used by children).

Legal

The information and examples provided in this section are intended as general information only. This does not constitute legal or insurance advice, nor does it pertain to determination of fault. In all cases, you should speak to an insurance advisor before acting. Your insurance policy contains limitations and restrictions which vary by province and may affect your coverage and/or determine whether or not benefits will be payable.

Please note that your policy may be nullified (voided) and your claim payment denied in the event that you misrepresent or omit to disclose any facts and relevant matters known to you which are likely to influence an insurer in the setting of the premium, the appraisal of the risk, or the decision to cover the risk. The same consequences may arise if you do not promptly notify the insurer of any changes that increase the risk specified in the policy and result from events within your control that are likely to influence the insurer in setting the premium, or deciding to continue to insure the risk.
