Additional coverage for car insurance

In general, the various types of additional insurance coverage available for vehicles are the same across Canada. If you’re interested in adding any of the following types of coverage to your car insurance policy, give us a call and one of our advisors will be happy to help you.

Type of coverage Examples
Specified perils:

This coverage pays only for losses caused by perils specifically listed in the policy (fire; theft or attempted theft; lightning, windstorm, hail, or rising water; earthquake; explosion; riot or civil disturbance; falling or forced landing of aircraft or parts of aircraft; stranding, sinking, burning, derailment or collision of any kind of transport in, or upon which a described automobile is being carried on land or water).
  • Your vehicle is stolen and never recovered, or recovered with substantial damage.
  • Fire engulfs the house next door, spreads to your driveway and destroys your vehicle.

This coverage includes specified perils but also pays for all other insured damage caused to your vehicle (e.g., fire, theft, vandalism), except for collision or upset.
  • High winds cause flying debris which damages your vehicle.
  • Vandals break into your garage and damage your vehicle.
Collision or upset:

This coverage pays for damage to your vehicle caused by a collision with another object or by upset.
  • Your vehicle is damaged as a result of it flipping over on the road.
  • You lose control of your vehicle on the ice and hit the guard rail.
All perils:

This coverage combines all perils, collision and comprehensive.
  • A flood damages your vehicle.

As with all insurance contracts, loss or damage coverage is subject to limits, deductibles and exclusions. Please see your auto insurance policy for the extent of your coverage.
