Program Overview

What is the TD MyAdvantage program?

The TD MyAdvantage program is a usage-based insurance savings program for Ontario and Quebec-based drivers that is 100% voluntary and free! It's designed to reward safe driving behavior - the safer you drive, the more you could save. The data collected will only be used to calculate your potential savings. It will not be used to increase your insurance premium. Premiums are otherwise subject to change in the normal course of insurance business operations and the discounts will be applied against those changes, if applicable. TD MyAdvantage rewards safe drivers based on individual driving behavior. Using a technology called telematics (a mix of telecommunications and informatics) it allows actual driving habits to be analyzed and measured.

A smartphone app captures driving data such as speed, GPS locations, mileage and driving style elements per trip. This information is then analyzed to create a driving score. We use this score to calculate and provide discounts on your premium. This is how TD MyAdvantage helps reward you for having safe driving habits.

Can I start a claim with the app?

No. However, the app provides phone numbers and tips to get direction on who to call and the right steps to take right after an accident.

What are the benefits of signing up for the TD MyAdvantage program?

You could save money on your auto insurance based on your personal driving habits and safety. The TD MyAdvantage app also provides feedback on your driving behavior and anyone else listed on your policy that has enrolled in the program. You also receive helpful and timely tips on how to be a safer driver.

Getting Started

Trial User

Can I try the TD MyAdvantage app before signing up?

Yes. We have a trial version of the app that you can use for 30 days. It will offer the same features as the fully activated version, however, you need to register and activate the app with an active TD Insurance policy to benefit from the discount. A trial period will give you a general idea of the score your driving would earn and potential savings.

How do I switch from trial to active user?

To enroll in the TD MyAdvantage program you will need to have an active TD Insurance policy. Go on our website for a quote and get our digital discount! If you are already a TD Insurance policy holder, call us at 1-866-223-1030 and ask one of our Advisors to enroll you in the TD MyAdvantage program today.

Is my data collected during the trial period?

Yes. Your data will be collected so that we can provide you with scores, tips and projected discounts as if you were an active policy holder and enrolled in the TD MyAdvantage program. However you will not benefit from the discount. At any point during the trial period you can call us at 1-866-223-1030 to enroll in the TD MyAdvantage program and begin using the activated version of the app. We will destroy all your data after 90 days from the end of your trial period.

Active User

How do I install the TD MyAdvantage app on my smartphone?

You will receive a welcome email on the day you actively enroll in the TD MyAdvantage program. The email provides information about where to get the app and what information is required to activate it. You will need either an iPhone or AndroidTM device. The app is optimized for the last three major versions of iOS and AndroidTM operating systems. Please note the app is not compatible with tablets.

Scoring & Discounts

Eligibility Requirements for the Program Discount

You have installed and activated the App at least 120 days before your Policy renewal documents are processed by TD Insurance

AND

You have recorded a minimum of 1,000 driven kms on the app prior to your Policy renewal documents being processed by TD Insurance.

How are my scores and discounts calculated?

The discount earned (savings) will be applied at the time of your renewal. The discount can range from 0%-25% based on your score. The safer your driving habits the more you could save. The data collected will only be used to calculate your potential savings. It will not be used to increase your insurance premium. Premiums are otherwise subject to change in the normal course of insurance business operations and the discounts will be applied against those changes, if applicable.

How is my score calculated?

For each trip, the app collects and analyzes data based on Time of day, Acceleration, Braking, Speed and Cornering.

What factors into my Acceleration score?

Your Acceleration score is determined by how frequently you accelerate rapidly. Rapid acceleration considers how quickly and by how much you increase your speed.

What factors into my Braking score?

Your Braking score is determined by how frequently you hard brake. Hard braking considers how quickly and by how much you decrease your speed.

If I have to brake hard to avoid an accident will that impact my score?

We know braking hard may be required at times. The score is calculated over the average of several trips so one occurrence in one trip should not have a significant impact on your score. The most important thing is your safety! Learn more about how accidents impact your car insurance rates.

What factors into my Speeding score?

Your Speeding score is determined by respecting the speed limit and driving at a safe speed compared to the posted speed limit.

What factors into my Cornering score?

Your Cornering score is determined by how fast the car is turning and the amount of "force" that throws drivers and passengers sideways.

How is my Average score calculated?

Your Average score is based on a 12-month rolling average of your driving scores. Thus, depending on the number of trips you take, a single trip may not have a significant impact on your score.

Trip Summary on the app will show you a map where the main events such as hard braking, speeding, cornering and acceleration are identified. Use the legend to analyze your trip. Remember that it doesn’t show every detail of a trip only the most significant events are displayed on the map.

Please note: Trips covering a very short distance will not appear in the app and will not be considered in the calculation of your score.

If someone else drives my vehicle, will this impact my score?

No. The TD MyAdvantage program is personalized to the driver.

What if I am not the driver during a trip but I am in the car with my smartphone?

You can flag that you are not the driver when the app starts recording. You will also be able to review your last 14 days of historical trips and flag the ones when you were not the driver.

Can more than one driver use the same app?

No. Each driver has a unique identification number and the app cannot be registered on two devices at the same time.

Why is time of day important?

We consider time of day because driving at night can be more dangerous due to reduced visibility and fatigue. When possible, we encourage daytime driving.

What is considered night time driving?

11pm – 4am on weekdays

11pm – 5am on weekends

If you are driving during these times, your overall score may be affected.

What if I get into an accident? Will the data collected be used in my claim?

Accidents are not taken into consideration when calculating your score or potential savings. The data collected will not be used as information towards a claim. The accident or claim may have an impact on your premium at renewal but not on your driving score or discount earned by using the TD MyAdvantage app.

Please note: Using your mobile device while operating a vehicle can present serious safety risks to you and passengers in addition to potentially being illegal in some jurisdictions. You should not use your mobile device while operating a vehicle and you must use your mobile device only in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

If I drive outside of my province or Country of residence, will the app still function?

The app will function regardless of where you are situated in the world as long as your location services are enabled, your phone is turned on and you have access to a cellular network. Please note that based on your network provider and your cellular plan, you may be charged roaming costs when using the app in another country. Any additional charges are your responsibility.

Can I cancel my enrollment at any time?

Yes. Your participation in the TD MyAdvantage program is optional and can be cancelled at any time during your policy term. Please note your policy premium will be readjusted as your TD MyAdvantage discount(s) will be removed. If you wish to cancel your participation in the TD MyAdvantage program, you can call us at 1-866-223-1030. Please note that the hours of support for the TD MyAdvantage program are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm EST.

Privacy

What data is collected and with whom will the data be shared?

The app will collect the following information for each trip you make:

  • GPS data (location information);
  • Distance travelled for each trip;
  • Acceleration, Speeding, Braking and Cornering derived from GPS or accelerometer data
  • Time of day
  • Confirmation of when the app is being turned on and off
  • Mobile device ID
  • Total mileage for all trips;
  • Battery level and charging status;
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection information;
  • Internet connectivity (Cellular or Wi-Fi).

We may use specific personal information (like your name, email address and postal code) to perform certain support activities, such as for authentication purposes when downloading, installing and troubleshooting the app.

How will my driving data be used?

For every trip, the app collects and securely transmits your data (i.e., hard braking, speeding, cornering and accelerating) for analysis and calculation of your driving score. Your driving data is then securely transmitted to the app to display scores. We will not use your driving data for any other purpose without your consent.

Is my data continuously collected?

Yes. Data will be collected with each trip.

My Device

Do I need a mobile data plan?

No. You don't need a mobile data plan, but you do need at least access to WiFi. Your driving data is collected using your phone's sensors and GPS. If you do not have a mobile data plan, your trip information will be uploaded once you connect to a WiFi network, such as through your home, work, in your vehicle or other WiFi location. We expect data consumption to be similar to other apps that use GPS.

Please note: The TD MyAdvantage app is free to download; however, standard wireless carrier data rates may apply.

Does the app affect my usual battery consumption?

The effect varies from one phone model to another. However, battery consumption will be similar to any other app using GPS features. If your phone's battery level is below 15%, the app will not start (or will automatically stop recording) if you're driving. The reason for this is that we don't want the app to drain your phone's entire battery by recording trips. Remember to make sure your phone is switched on and the battery is charged enough so that trip data can be collected.

What type of smartphone do I need to have?

You need either an iPhone or AndroidTM device. The app is optimized for the last 3 major versions of iOS and AndroidTM operating systems. Please note the app is not compatible with tablets and Blackberry operating systems (OS).

What if I get a new phone?

It is important to remove the TD MyAdvantage app from any previous devices before re-installing on your new device.

Simply re-download the app and enter your email and PIN (created upon initial setup).You will pick up where you left off. Download instructions can be found in the original welcome email or you can call 1-866-223-1030 to have it resent. Please note that the hours of support for the TD MyAdvantage program are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST.

What if my trips are not recording?

If you are driving and notice there are no trips or missing trips, we recommend you verify certain settings on your phone. Once you correct the below settings, we recommend taking a drive to verify if the trip recorded.

Quick verification

For iPhone users: Background app refresh must be turned on for TD MyAdvantage to process your trips. Please note, by putting your phone in low power mode, background app refresh will automatically be turned off for TD MyAdvantage.

For Android users: Please enable location, phone, and storage under the permission section of the TD MyAdvantage app.

What if my trips are still not recording?

My App

Why are certain trips under |My Trips| section a different color?

It is possible that certain trips are highlighted in a different color. Should you see trips in green, these trips are being identified as a "public transit trip" by the app. If you were not on public transit and were the driver of a vehicle you must click the trip and confirm that you were indeed not on public transit. Please note that after 14 days, if the trips are not validated, the km's and score will not be attributed.

Can I delete the app from my phone?

Participation and eligibility in the TD MyAdvantage program require that the application be installed at all times on your phone. If you delete the app you will be notified and informed that if you do not reinstall the app, you will be removed from the TD MyAdvantage program and lose your discount.

What should I do if I accidentally delete the app?

No problem. Simply re-download the app and enter your email and PIN (created upon initial setup). You will pick up where you left off. Download instructions can be found in the original welcome email or you can call 1-866-223-1030 to have it resent. Who can I contact if I have questions or experience errors with the app?

Please call 1-866-223-1030. A TD Insurance Advisor will provide you with the support you require. Please note that the hours of support for the TD MyAdvantage program are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST.

If I change my email address, what should I do?

Call 1-866-223-1030. Inform the TD Insurance Advisor that you changed your email address and update your account. Please note that the hours of support for the TD MyAdvantage program are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST.

Do I need to turn on the app before each trip?

No. The app runs in the operating background of your phone and will automatically start recording whenever driving movement is detected.

What should I do if my trips are not recorded?

If your trips are not recorded, there are few things that you should check:

  • Make sure that your battery level is above 15%
  • Check the status of location services and if the app has received permission to access location services

What if I forgot my PIN?

Please call 1-866-223-1030. A TD Insurance Advisor will reset it for you.

What if I want to change my PIN?

You need to go in the settings and select ''Reset PIN''. You will need your previous PIN to change your PIN successfully.

How can I change the language of the app?

The TD MyAdvantage app language follows your phone settings. If you wish to change the language of your app, please change the language of your phone.

What are Badges?

Badges are fun awards you can earn through the app by meeting challenges designed to help you become a safer driver. The better you drive, the more badges you can earn!
